About Us

Bankstown Theatre Company (formerly known as Bankstown Theatrical Society) is a community non-profit organisation whose objective is to stage high quality musical productions and plays.

Our multi talented members contribute to all facets of our stage productions, both on and off the stage. They are involved in a myriad of tasks ranging from costuming, designing and building sets, lighting, properties, selling tickets, seating patrons and selling refreshments.

The company rehearses at the Bankstown Arts Centre and we stage 3-4 productions a year. These are currently performed at the Bankstown Arts Centre.

OUR GOALS
  • to provide quality entertainment to the Bankstown Community and beyond
  • to develop, foster and support local talent
  • to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow theatre enthusiasts

From Bankstown Opera Company to
Bankstown Theatre Company

When the first stage productions were put on in Bankstown is a matter of conjecture, as there seems to be little documentation. There were apparently three companies presenting musicals and two companies doing plays. The Bankstown Opera Company was founded in 1931 and the first show produced was “The Quaker Girl”. Musical shows were presented regularly until the intervention of World War 11, which depleted the ranks of male members and the company was disbanded.

In 1948 Les Enderbury, who for years had been involved with theatre in the area decided it was high time that live theatre returned to Bankstown. A meeting was held and a repertory company was formed.

The first show was “The Ghost Train” which was performed at the Capitol (now the site of the Town Hall) in 1949.

It was decided then to branch out into musical theatre and the first musical produced was “Rose Marie” in 1950. So the musical society and the repertory company combined and the Bankstown Theatrical Society was formed.

In keeping with our moving into our new premises and the start of a brand new era it was recently decided to change our name to the Bankstown Theatre Company.

At the end of 2010, since it’s reforming in 1949 the company has performed 130 musicals, 54 plays and 15 pantomimes.

In this time many people have put in a lot of hard work, dedication and love in bringing live theatre to the people of Bankstown and surrounding areas.
