Becoming a member of the Bankstown Theatre Company is a great way to meet new people and explore your talents.
Acting and Singing
Of course this is the reason so many people join a theatre group. We audition for each show by advertising on our website , facebook and sometimes in the papers, both mainstream and local.
However, there are so many other ways to become involved!
Costumes
Bankstown Theatre Company mostly make all their own costumes and have a substantial wardrobe. We have a wonderful, friendly group, led by Tony, who design and make for each production as well as hire out to other groups. The costume department may perform many tasks such as manufacture, buy, hire or source costumes for each production. This can vary from modern to period costumes. They alter and repair costumes in the wardrobe and make sure that they are properly stored and cared for. This department also dresses and looks after the wigs if used in a production.
Stage Management
Start with shifting scenery. Perhaps take charge of the properties (the bits and pieces the actors carry on stage)
Eventually, after sufficient shows as Assistant Stage Manager, ASM, you can become the full SM. It’s the Stage Manager who runs the show, who makes sure everything and everything is in place, who says “Go” and “Stop”. During a run the SM is in total command
Set Design, Painting and Construction
You are a craftsman, proud of your competence? Join us and do the nasty things you’d never dream of doing in real life. Discover all the sins that can be covered up with masking tape and a coat of black paint. No experience in building things? You always hit the wrong nail with the hammer? That’s fine— there are many jobs in set construction. Are you an artist? Want to paint on a big scale? Learn the finer art of set painting from our talented scenic artist, Vince. And then there’s set design. It’s a demanding job both artistically and technically. Work with the director to achieve the ambience he wants, then work out how to build it.
Lighting and Sound
The technical aspects of a theatrical production are lights and sound. The main purpose of lights is to ensure the actors can be seen. But there’s much more to it than that. Lighting can indicate time of day, weather, change of scene, mood of protagonists, or just pretty lighting effects. Sound Designers/Operator are responsible for microphones (if used in a production) as well as music and sound effects.
Front of House
Sell tickets and programmes, show patrons to their seats, serve tea and coffee, watch most of the show, join the cast and crew after the show for drinks and supper. Does this sound like a win-win to you? Send an expressions of interest email to our secretary with subject "Attn FOH Manager Amy" for more details.
Publicity and Promotions
So we’ve created this amazing show. And it's got everything - talented performers and crew, exciting staging, great production values. It's a must-see! However, our work has just begun, as all of that means nothing unless we tell the world about it. After all, prospective audiences have to hear about our show in order to attend. So that’s where great PR enters the picture. So if you’ve got talents in graphic design, promotion, database knowledge, can write dynamic press releases, we’d love you to join our publicity team. Please email Kate at [email protected]
Any more questions?
Feel free to email our President Simon Fry at [email protected]
